Give Trail Running a Try!

Trail Running is a great way to add some new scenery to your runs, but it also helps to make you a better runner.  Here are some of the benefits of trail running:

  1. Efficient Technique.  By running on uneven trail surfaces, you will take shorter and quicker strides (especially if navigating roots or rocks), and therefore land in a more natural mid foot strike.  This can help improve your overall running technique into a more efficient stride.
  2. Faster Running.  Sure, the trails may seem harder (and slower) at first, but the soft surfaces, uneven terrain, and hills are giving your body a great workout which will improve your overall running fitness.
  3. Less Injuries.  Since the ground is softer than concrete or asphalt, your body will experience less impact upon each footstrike.  The softer surfaces will also help you build more strength in the muscles that help stabilize your lower leg.

So try your next run off-road!  Looking for some more tips to improve your running?  My free online Running Clinic is going on this month,  follow me on Instagram or Facebook for a new video each day geared towards running technique, drills, and strength exercises.  Each Friday I will post week’s video here on my blog!

  1. Totally agree! Took to trail running when marathon training took it’s toll and I started picking up injury after injury. I’ve been trail running for 18 months now and have to say I have not been off injured yet!! I also find using the foam roller after sessions really helps minimise injuries too.
    Great post 🙂
